Coffee & Community Panel on Local Journalism

Local experts shared their perspective

The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the League of Women Voters, recently hosted a Coffee & Community panel discussion on the importance of local journalism. Community members heard from representatives of print, radio, and television media who shared insights into how news is gathered, reported, and delivered across different platforms.

Panelists discussed topics including how stories are determined to be newsworthy, the role of editors and publishers, the distinction between news reporting and opinion content, and the importance of maintaining trust and credibility in journalism. Attendees also learned about the challenges facing local news organizations and the vital role local journalism plays in keeping residents informed, fostering civic engagement, and strengthening communities.

The Chamber appreciates the panelists for sharing their expertise and perspectives, and thanks everyone who attended and contributed to this important community conversation. And thank you to the Noon Rotary Club for their sponsorship, the Becker County Museum for hosting and Fundamental Technologies for sound and video production.
